Parrots explore with flight, feet and beaks. Ordinary household objects can become hazards quickly, so safety works best as a system rather than a list remembered after the bird is out.
Protect the air first
Bird respiratory systems are highly sensitive. Smoke, aerosols, scented products and fumes from overheated PTFE-containing non-stick products can be dangerous.
Keep the bird away from kitchens and active renovation or cleaning fumes. If exposure is suspected or breathing changes, seek urgent veterinary guidance.
Prepare the flight path
Switch off ceiling fans, secure doors, make large windows and mirrors visible, cover open water and supervise interactions with other animals.
- Hide or guard electrical cords
- Remove toxic plants and accessible medicines
- Check toys, clips and fabric for entanglement or ingestion risks
- Create a clear landing place before opening the enclosure
Recheck whenever the room changes
A new appliance, plant, candle, heater or cleaning product can alter the risk. Walk through the room from a flying and chewing animal’s perspective each time the setup changes.
